As a freelance writer, you may see yourself on one side of a very simple equation: You are the contractor, and it’s your job to do work for the client. While this is certainly true, it takes more than just one person to run a successful business venture, even if it’s freelance in nature. Sure, you may be a good writer, but what about web development? Design? Photoshop? Coding? Marketing? Social media? These are all areas of expertise that need to be tapped at some point to build a business that works, and no matter how talented you are, no one can do all of it alone.

Switching roles: Becoming a Client

Before you start your hunt for contractors, the first thing you need to do is figure out exactly what needs to be done, and in what order it should be completed.

The most logical place to start is your website, having a polished, presentable, and functional website is one of the most important factors for freelancers looking for work. Having a professional build a WordPress site from the ground up can cost you $500 and up, so if you have WordPress experience it would be wise to put up a basic design and fill out all the content before relying on a contractor. If you have the meat of the site completed, you might be able to get away with just hiring a designer instead of a developer to touch up your site, design a logo, and maybe redo the theme, which would cost a lot less.

Some functions of your site may require some skills you don’t have- for example, if you wanted to put in a robust order form so clients can select what they want and pay automatically, you may need to seek a freelance developer (if you can’t use something like Gravity Forms).

Once the site is ready (which should include your portfolio/resume, samples of your work, client reviews, a way to contact you, etc.), it’s time to consider a marketing effort to get some exposure. If you use a site like Elance or Odesk to find work, include a link to your website in your proposals. However, if you’re seeking clients outside of such platforms, you’ll need to get a little creative.

SEO, or Search Engine Optimization, is one way to drive traffic to your site to find potential clients. In order to do this it’s essential to have an active blog on your site where you regularly update it with content pertinent to your industry. If you don’t know anything about SEO, it would be a good idea to go ahead and find a contractor who does so they can optimize your site the right way and do a link building campaign for you.

You can also find a good amount of work by posting your service on internet marketing and webmaster forums in the Buy/Sell/Trade sections. You shouldn’t really need a contractor for this unless you really aren’t comfortable with copywriting, just write up a pitch for your service and link to your website/portfolio and someone is bound to have interest.

Once you have a steady amount of work coming from clients, you may find yourself bogged down in the administrative and organization area. This is where a Virtual Assistant comes into play- you can pay someone else to take care of all the ‘paperwork’ stuff and keep your records and schedules organized. This is usually a long-term hourly job, it’s much cheaper to hire someone overseas- they aren’t native English speakers for the most part, but they are usually quite fluent and their office work is usually just as good as US workers.

Where to Find Contractors

Once you figure out where you need help in your freelance business plan, it’s time to bring some contractors on board. I personally like to use places like Odesk, Elance, Guru, and Freelancer because it’s free to post jobs and contractors are generally more accountable for their work because their ratings rely on it. However some of the best services are available elsewhere on their own sites, search around the web and consult forums to figure out which contractors are right for your needs. You can even get some of the small stuff done on Fiverr for just 5 bucks, I bet you wouldn’t believe the logo on this very site was designed from someone on Fiverr.

It’s amazing to think that some of history’s greatest ever scribes didn’t always finish a novel. What’s more fascinating is when those books were amongst some of those writer’s most acclaimed pieces of work. It’s incredible what you can get away with when you’re a genius. Here’s a look at the greatest books ever written that each of which, for various reasons, were never actually finished.

The Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer

It is believed that author Geoffrey Chaucer wrote his stories between 1387 and 1400. The General Prologue states that each pilgrim featured in the works should tell two tales on the way to Canterbury and two tales on the way back. However, his project was never finished, probably due to the enormity of the project and even the completed tales were not finally revised. When Chaucer died he left hand written manuscripts, all which had to be reworked and put into some kind of order, although no one is really sure what order the tales should be in. The original copies of Canterbury Tales were printed in 1477 by William Caxton, the first printer to introduce the printing press in England. Only one of these first copies is still in private hands and was sold in an auction in 1998 for £4,621,500.

The Mystery of Edwin Drood by Charles Dickens

This literary masterpiece is the last thing Charles Dickens wrote before he died, apparently exhausted by the amount of public appearances and work he had put upon himself. The book, which was two thirds finished when he died, centres not around character Edwin Drood but that of his Uncle Jasper who was a rather nasty piece of work. Scholars have several possible endings to the story as Dickens wrote to his biographer John Forster telling him he had dismissed his planned ending for another one but wouldn’t disclose anything further. The BBC made plans at the beginning of this year to produce an adaptation of the unfinished novel and actually write an ending to it so watch this space.

Don Juan by Lord Byron

This is considered Byron’s masterpiece even though he died while in the middle of writing it. Don Juan is a comical poem, rather than a novel and a lengthy one at that which takes legend Juan through affairs and slave ships. Interestingly Byron appears to have put a slant on the original character traits of Juan and portrays him not as a womaniser but as someone easily seduced by women. However, we will never know what Byron had in store for him at the end as he died from a fever in Greece before finishing it. The impression we have of Byron is that although dedicated, he wrote Don Juan when not tied up with other commitments in his busy life, such as romancing his mistress Lady Caroline Lamb or travelling.

Sanditon by Jane Austen

Sanditon is very amusing, witty and modern for its day and written while Austen was suffering a serious illness which ultimately within six months, led to her death. The novel is based around the construction of a seaside town and the lives of the people who have invested and are planning to live there. It is believed the new town is based on Worthing or Eastbourne from Austen’s personal experiences with the areas. After her death, the book was finished by several authors, all who gave different titles to the book.

The Castle by Franz Kafka

The Castle is a dark novel centring around the narrator, only known as K., who tries to gain access to a castle which governs the village for unknown reasons. Author Kafta died of Tuberculosis in 1924 before he could finish it and ordered his friend Max Brod to destroy his transcripts on his death. This was ignored, however, and Brod went on to edit and publish his friend’s writings. No-one knows what the ending would have been as Kafta never gave any clue while alive and it is questioned whether he would have actually finished the work had he survived his illness or not. Most of his works were published posthumously and, unlike many authors, he had no recognition of his writing while he was alive.

With new people around them and a new environment, college students are hard pressed to find time to do essay editing during college days. Endless streams of assignments, essays, midterms and final exams make finding extra time to see friends and relax difficult. The Internet has many websites that offer essay writing services, but what students really need is editing services.

Edit, not Write

Essay editing is the best option for students. With essay writing, some other writer creates an essay based on their knowledge instead of class seminars and readings. The purchased essay may not line up with the class assignment or teacher’s intent. Worse still, the essay that was bought online has a higher chance of being plagiarized from another source.

In place of paying someone to write an essay, hire an experienced writer to edit it. College days are filled with more interesting and exciting things to do. Instead of wasting time editing an essay, pay someone else to fix. This saves time and ensures that the student’s essay is in line with their class prospectus.

Catches Mistakes

The worse part of writing an essay is rereading it. Writers can never spot all of their own mistakes. Part of this is due to a trick the mind plays. As the writer rereads their essay, their mind reads what they intended to write instead of what they did write. Writers end up seeing how they wanted to write the essay and not the real draft. By turning in an essay to an editing service, students can obtain an extra pair of eyes. The editor can spot mistakes they missed and give words of advice on how to write future essays.

Types of Essays

About to apply for college? Find an editor for the college application. Services that edit essays will often help with scholarship essays, cover letters, term papers and thesis essays. Although price ranges vary, the cost is worth it. Students can get polish their essays, get new tips and a perfect essay out of the experience. Many of the services online like Grade Saver even let students select their own editor. Over time, students and editors can develop a close working relationship. Ideas and advice can be exchanged between the two individuals. After the student and editor have worked together for a while, the student will have the skills they need to write better essays. For smoother college days, finding essay editing services is the key.

Sam Wilson is now a teacher. Sam Wilson loves a well thought out essay.

The SEO landscape is always in a state of flux, but we may be on the verge of an unusually radical algorithm change from Google with the implementation of Authorship and Author Rank. The focus is beginning to shift to who wrote a piece of content rather than where it’s posted and how optimized the keywords are. This is an important distinction, once the Authorship system is in full swing search results from Google will heavily favor sites with Authorship enabled and content written by experienced authors with authority in their industry.

What is Authorship?

Authorship began in July of 2011, it is essentially a method by which Google can verify the owner of a web page by linking it to their Google+ profile using a two-way handshake. The result is that any pages verified with Authorship markup will appear in search results with the author’s Google+ profile picture and link accompanying it:

Not only will this increase CTR (click through rate), but it will also improve the writer’s Author Rank (more on this in a moment).

In order to enable Authorship on a website or page, we’ll need to use the “rel=author” HTML tag (without quotes), which can be done by simply adding ?rel=author to the end of a URL. This method can be confusing for writers who aren’t web development oriented- I recommend using the AuthorSure plugin if you run WordPress or using Google’s email form.

When writing for sites owned by a client or guest posting, make it a habit to ask about enabling authorship and verifying any content you write as your own. This is not only helpful to you, but the webmaster will also see increased CTR and rankings in Google.

What is Author Rank?

Author Rank is a metric that goes hand-in-hand with Authorship that measures how credible a writer is based on their posts associated with their Google+ profile (yes, this does include posts and comments you make on Google+ itself).

Author Rank is evaluated based on the quality of the article and the amount of interaction in generates in the form of social signals and comments. This evaluation is then applied to the topic or niche being discussed, so the idea is you’ll have a different Author Rank for different topics and industries. This encourages writers to specialize in a certain area and stick to it instead of spreading themselves thin.

Why does this matter for writers?

As a writer, some may see Authorship as purely the domain of webmasters and developers and not something that a freelancer needs to bother with. That may be somewhat true at the time of this writing, at this point Authorship and Author Rank are still in the infancy stages and their implementation is still largely experimental. However, anyone who keeps up with the SEO industry will tell you that Authorship is going to be huge once Google has all the details worked out- identity is going to play a big role when determining authority in the future.

This matters for writers on the web because this shift in focus to Author Rank to achieve high rankings in search results means that clients are going to start hiring writers based largely on their Google+ profiles and Author Rank in a given topic. Why would a client hire a writer who doesn’t have their Authorship stuff in order as opposed to one who does (especially once it starts heavily impacting rankings)?

My advice to you: Read up on Authorship some more, flesh out your Google+ profile and start participating in discussions on there, and start enabling Authorship on your own sites and blogs to begin building your Author Rank.

Freelance writing newcomers may find it difficult to find work at first because of their lack of experience, which reflects in their weak or nonexistent portfolio. Luckily, learning how to build a freelance writing portfolio isn’t very hard and doesn’t require an immense amount of time or effort considering the rewards.

Building a Website

Yes, every freelance writer should have their own website. It makes things a lot easier in the marketing department and it’s essential to building your reputation.

The first step is grabbing a domain name, you can just use your name if it’s available or you can use your name in combination with something else, for example ThompsonWriting.com, just make sure it looks professional. You can get a domain name for $9.99 a year from NameCheap- You could also use GoDaddy but I wouldn’t recommend it.

After that you’ll need to rent a server to host your site on, HostGator is probably the easiest to use for beginners- a shared hosting plan will do for a while if you don’t get much traffic.

Go ahead and install WordPress through the admin panel, probably under QuickInstall or Fantastico. I won’t go into into detail in this post on how to configure WordPress and go about installing a theme and plugins, it’s a complex topic that can be researched elsewhere. Try to find a professional theme and create a page that will serve as your portfolio/resume, it would be wise to add a contact page as well and perhaps a few blog posts to show off your writing prowess.

Now the problem here is that your portfolio section is pretty much empty if you just started- here’s a way to fix that:

Guest Posting Your Way to Credibility

Websites and blogs need to publish content constantly to stay relevant, so a great many of them accept guest posts if they are of high enough quality and pertinent to their readers. This is a golden opportunity for beginner freelance writers, your first task is to find as many blogs related to your best topics as you can- IE. tech writers should find tech/computer related blogs that accept guest posts (you can do this by using keywords in Google like “write for us” and “submit guest post”). Try to find sites that are PR3 and upwards.

Take the time to read the blogs you plan on submitting to, get a feel for what sort of content they are looking for. You’ll want to have a completed article ready before contacting the owner asking to submit a guest post, so write up the best piece of content that you possibly can (remember that this article will also be used as part of your portfolio to woo future clients).

After that it’s just a matter of submitting as many posts as you can to a variety of different blogs and sites, if you are a good writer many of them are bound to get published. This is a chance for you to link back to your portfolio site from the article and get some SEO weight, but the main point of doing this is to use this published piece as evidence of your writing ability. Grab the links of your published articles and put them right on your Portfolio page on your website, in the future you can refer clients to this page to see that you are indeed a published web writer.

Learning how to write a query letter is an essential step to take for any writer who wants to make a career out of their work, especially those who want to write for magazines and newspapers. Fiction writers can certainly make use of them as well when looking for agents and publishers or submitting to literary magazines, but this article will focus on pitching articles, news, and features to magazines and newspapers- we will cover fiction queries in a future post.

The purpose of a query letter

Query letters are short, succinct summaries of ideas for articles that contributors send in to editors of publications for a chance to turn those ideas into published pieces with their name on it. Many magazines, newspapers, and other publications buy a large portion of their content from freelance writers and contributors, and they do this by reading queries- mostly through email but some still prefer physical copies.

It’s easy to see the importance of an effective query letter- it’s the only chance you have to get your idea in front of an editor and success relies on just a single page. The idea is to convince the editor that your idea is a perfect fit for their publication and that you are capable of writing it, so it’s essential to showcase your writing skills and experience in your queries.

The right idea for the right publication

Pitching the wrong idea to a magazine is setting yourself up for failure and will often get your query sent straight to the trash bin, so prior research is absolutely necessary. The number one rule is to know the publication inside and out, read any magazine that you plan on contributing to religiously- read back-issues and the latest releases, stay on top of their competitors and become an expert in the industry. Become familiar with the magazines style, the type of articles that they publish and what they’ve already recently covered- it is all necessary if you plan on making an attractive query.

Look into the magazine’s editorial calender and take note of when they publish articles on certain topics and where your idea would fit in best. Don’t overlap with subject matter that regular contributors might be covering. Also, don’t quit just because you didn’t get a response right away or your response wasn’t an acceptance- keep trying until something sticks if you think you are a good fit for a magazine.

Attention grabbing headings

The heading of your query will determine whether the editor even bothers to open your email or not, so it’s crucial that you start off on the right foot. Make it very clear that you are querying an article idea and submitting a proposal, something like “Query: 7 Style Tips for the Office”.

Strong, clear lead

The first paragraph should read very similarly to what you’d write if you were making a lead for the actual article- this is your chance to show the editor your writing skills while presenting your case as to why the article fits their publication. Your lead should summarize the subject matter of the article and the direction you plan on going with it, make the story sound relevant and interesting to the publication’s audience and really sell yourself as the right freelancer for the job.

Writing a query letter is an exercise in your technical skills as a writer and the editor will take your word choice and the structure of your paragraphs into account. Try to use the style and format of the magazine as much as you can and demonstrate to the editor that you are familiar with what they are looking for at least in terms of technique.

Unique and interesting hook/angle

Your article needs to fit nicely into the magazine and provide value and entertainment to it’s audience, so once again knowing the publication is essential. Pick up a subscription or head down to your local library and see if they have some issues in stock- you may also be able to read a large portion of it online. Do whatever it takes to get familiar with the magazine and the kind of ideas that they publish.

No one wants to publish an article that’s generic and uninteresting, magazines want pieces with an original twist or fresh angle that really grabs people’s attention. Don’t submit “How to Lose Weight” to a health magazine, instead put a spin on it and propose something like “How to get rid of that extra chin”, an idea that fits the tone of the magazine and makes the audience want to read the article.

Establish credibility as a writer

The last part of your query should contain some information about you as a writer and prove to the editor that you are capable of handling this assignment. Some clips of your work are necessary, if you haven’t been published in any magazines or newspapers before then try to get your work on some websites and blogs with as much clout as possible- it’s much easier to get published online than it is in print. Show them your best work, preferably related to the topic of their magazine.

Social signals are a big part of SEO and establishing authority for a website, but it’s difficult for newbies to reap the benefits of them because the likes and +1′s are coming in at a trickle. A great way to kick start social activity on your site is to get some artificial social signals showing, in other words people are more likely to click Like if they see that you already have a few Likes as opposed to if you had none. Luckily there are many ways to bulk up your initial social numbers, some of which are free.

I recently stumbled across a social media exchange network called Reloader.me. The idea is very similar to Twiends- you can follow, like, and +1 other people’s pages to get credit, and then that credit can be used to get the same things for your own pages from other members (you decide the cost per click, not the provider). You can also just purchase credit and buy social interactions outright, but the appeal of this site is more for beginners who don’t have a big budget for this sort of thing.

The reason this is superior to service providers on places like Fiverr who offer a certain amount of likes/followers for money is that these appear much more natural and often people use their real profiles on Reloader.me instead of robots (it’s recommended that you make separate accounts to dish out likes/+1′s). It’s also a very fast and streamlined process, you don’t need to actually visit people’s pages individually because Reloader.me puts all the buttons on one page so you can just click away, like this:

Overall, Reloader.me is looking to be a promising method for beginners to jump start social activity on their site without spending any money.

Just remember, fake likes and followers won’t do you any good on their own- the idea is to use their perceived value to entice people to organically engage your site socially.

Learning how to write newspaper articles is one of the most fundamental skills for any writer to have and it lays a foundation for many other formats and allows you to flex your journalistic muscles. Newspaper article writing is unique in that it’s harshly succinct, but learning how to write in this simple “just the facts, ma’am” style carries over wonderfully into other areas of writing and teaches you to write more clearly without bloating your prose- after all one of the golden rules of writing is getting rid of words that you can do without.

Whether you are looking to get a gig on the local rag or just want to expand your arsenal of writing skills this is a great beginners guide on how to write a standard newspaper article.

The inverted pyramid format

The objective of any newspaper article is to grab the reader immediately and keep them interested in your story for as long as possible- think about when you read the newspaper, do you read each and every article all the way through? Of course not, everyone skips past the stuff that doesn’t interest them- And even if they do find something interesting they often don’t stick around for the whole article (how many times have you read up to ‘continued on page 8′ and just put it down?). Our audience is a fickle bunch and we need to grab their attention immediately and keep it as long as we can with our article, so we use a principle called the inverted pyramid.

The inverted pyramid scheme is a very simple way to wrap your head around the structure of a basic newspaper article designed to grab attention. The width of the pyramid represents importance and pertinence, the wider it is the more important and urgent the information should be at that point in the story. As you can see from the image of the inverted pyramid above, our opening should contain the most pressing and important information about the story, and as we go on the information gets less and less important and interesting, consisting of details and explanations. So how do we turn this inverted pyramid idea into an actual article?

Each article starts out as a set of facts, a story that happened in chronological order accompanied by a series of details. However, we aren’t presenting the story in chronological order when we write a newspaper article about it, our very first paragraph (preferably the first sentence) should summarize the entire event while drawing focus to the most interesting dimension of the story. These dimensions are generally seperated into five familiar W’s: Who, What, When, Where, Why. It’s your job to decide which parts of the story are the most interesting and to emphasize these in the lead as much as possible. Let’s take a look at an example:

VIENNA, Austria (AP) — California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is getting a birthday gift in his home country: a stamp in his honor.

The Austrian post office announced on its Web site that the $1.25 stamp will be released on the actor-turned-politician’s birthday, July 30. Schwarzenegger, who will be 57, was born in the Austrian village of Thal near the southern city of Graz.

The stamp — which shows Schwarzenegger in a suit and tie with the American and Austrian flags in the background — is part of a collectors’ series called “Austrians living abroad,” the post office said.

Schwarzenegger moved to the United States in 1968 to pursue a career as a body builder and movie star. He made his first visit to Austria as California governor last weekend, when he represented the United States at the state funeral of President Thomas Klestil.

- Associated Press

Notice how the very first sentence mentions the main interest of the story (who: Arnold Schwarzenegger) and summarized the main events. As the article progresses it expands on these events, adding details in descending order of interest and importance.

Also notice how each paragraph is only a sentence or two, newspaper writing is very segmented and each paragraph should only focus on one specific topic. Your writing should be very tight and concise, don’t embellish or use fluffy descriptive prose- we aren’t writing a novel. Stick to the facts and don’t inject your own opinions or conclusions, just present the story.

Proper use of quotations

Almost every newspaper article uses a quotation at some point to give the story a sense of human credibility, the fact that someone relevant to the situation gave their input is important and should be utilized in the article at some point. However, quotes should be handled responsibly and used in context- many journalists have found themselves in trouble for the improper use of quotations.

It’s important not to present your readers with any big blocks of quotations, most people don’t feel like reading a full transcript of someone else’s exact words and may end up turning the page or just skipping it. It’s best to use fragments from someone’s full quotation throughout your article and fill in the blanks yourself- see the third paragraph in the example article above to see that in action. You want your article to have a fast paced flow so that readers feel compelled to keep reading (which is why small paragraphs are preferred), giving them too big of a quote will interrupt that flow and lose attention.

Also, keep with the theme of minimizing embellishment and unnecessary descriptors- ‘said’ will do just fine in almost every case for newspaper articles, you may misrepresent the person you are quoting by describing their manner of speaking.

Responsible journalism – best reporting practices

It’s your duty as a journalist to present your audience with an objective view of the story. However, in reality it is entirely impossible to be completely free of bias when writing a news story, because the very act of investigation and reporting information means that the story must be put through the filter of your own word choice, your audience will view the story through a lens that you create. This makes your responsibility as a journalist that much more important, you are the one that decides the context in which this story is presented, and that’s something you can’t take lightly.

It’s totally fine and even encouraged to speak your mind when writing opinion pieces and columns, but when it comes to hard news you need to take yourself out of the equation as much as possible. Put aside your political affiliations and emotional responses, take a look at the story from the perspective of the reader and give them what they need to formulate their own educated opinion on the subject. Be aware of the way you word things and always re-read your articles several times before sending it off to the editor or publisher.

Research and information gathering

Before you get anything on paper the facts need to be collected and you need to have a clear picture of the story, and this process varies wildly depending on the publication and your particular beat (or niche). This means you will probably need to conduct interviews, sit in on meetings and events, and talk to people who were involved with your story. This requires a certain amount of sociability and a willingness to hear people out- there’s no room for your ego when gathering facts and quotes.

This may seem obvious, but when you’re out in the field gathering information you need to be prepared with the proper supplies. Carry several pens and a pad of paper at all times, learn to write fast and use some method of shorthand if you plan on taking quotes on paper. Preferably you should have some sort of recording device when doing interviews (with consent of course) so you never accidentally misquote anyone and don’t have to furiously scribble as they talk.

No matter what you need to keep your ear to the ground even when you aren’t actively researching for an article, be aware of what’s going on in your area and in any industries that you write about regularly. Remember that the internet is your friend if you need to brush up on some basic facts, but don’t use it as a crutch if you can use a first-hand account or a professional assessment instead.

Why learn newspaper writing?

After all, everyone seems to be under the concencus that print media is dead and no one reads newspapers anymore. While that simply isn’t true, print media does seem to be on the decline and digital reporting seems to be the next big thing in journalism. However, the skills gained from writing for print newspapers carry over directly to the online world, the same principles hold true and the writing style is very similar.

Being a proficient news writer also gives you some great job opportunities, ask around your local papers and see if they are looking for any new writers and you’d be surprised how many want to grow their team. This is a great way to get your foot in the door in the writing world and to get started with a rewarding career.

Arranging words on a page to convey thoughts and ideas is a very complex process that relies entirely on the way the composer perceives and comprehends their world. Developing a personal writing style is a natural evolution that takes place throughout the entire career of any writer, and it can be profoundly influenced by nearly any aspect of the writer’s life or education.

In order to refine and distill your stream of imaginative consciousness into a lucid and comprehensible string of text, you’ll first need to have a very strong grasp on the English language, the boundaries of syntax and grammar that you must abide by. These are the building blocks, the concept of writing style is not as simple as using one word or another- it’s the sum of all the parts, it is affected by the way you craft the plot, characters, and settings, the way it all comes together as well as the voice with which it is told.

The art of the sentence

The most basic whole unit of writing is the sentence. I know you’re thinking words are more basic, and they are, but they are meaningless individually. A sentence has enough context to stand on it’s own and it must be guided along by the hand of the writer. Everything about the sentence defines it’s style, and the possibilities are truly infinite.

Sentences come in all shapes and sizes. A sentence can be extremely short, such as the famous line from the Bible, “Jesus wept.” Just two words, but they still paint the picture effectively. A different writer may have approached this weeping in a more verbose manner, but sometimes simplicity is more powerful. You must develop an ear for rhythm and flow and use your own judgement to decide which angle to approach your story from. You may have a plot and a scene all mapped out in your head, but actually putting it on paper can transmute it in unpredictable ways. Just as a filmmaker may shoot a scene from different angles or with different lighting to change the way the work is interpreted, a writer also makes these aesthetic decisions during the writing process.

There are several different archetypes for sentence structure that define all sentences, and you should be aware of them as you write to stay conscious of the order in which you present information- one of the key elements of style is deciding what the reader does and doesn’t know during any point in the narrative. This boils down to where you want to place the subject of the sentence and where you want to place it’s modifiers, most modern writers state the subject early and then go on to expand and describe it.

Perspective and perception

The way a writer envisions the narrative in their mind shapes the tone and style of the text. Thus, writing style is dependent on the writer’s ability to immerse themselves in an environment and perceive every detail they can from their chosen perspective. This choice of perspective is a daunting one that most novice writers fumble with, it’s difficult to consistently tell the story from a variety of angles without confusing the reader, but at the same time you don’t want to be too static. In my experiences it’s best to sort perspectives by scene or chapter, and make it very clear whether we are seeing the world through the eyes of a certain character or the narrator, their commentary and non-verbal thoughts are often hard to discern from each other.

Let’s do a quick example scene just to demonstrate the importance of perspective when it comes to writing style. We have a simple encounter- a boy isn’t quite sure how to ask a girl out on a date, but he’s going to give it a shot. How should we handle this scene? If we are assuming the boy is the protagonist of the story, you’ll most likely be inside his head throughout the scene, and any details we give about the girl and her behavior will be through the boy, it’ll be his view of her. Now that doesn’t mean you have to write in the first person, getting inside a character’s head is entirely doable as a third person narrator, I recommend reading some Philip K. Dick to see this done masterfully.

Another option for this scene would be to tell it from the girl’s point of view, but consistency is the key to clarity when it comes to perspective. Don’t jump around too much (or at all) within a single scene, no one wants to struggle to keep track of who’s train of thought they are following, they just want it to flow naturally.

Connotation, word choice, and mood

Much of a writer’s style is derived from word choice, how you choose to convey ideas and choosing which words fit best. A witty writer will often employ double meanings and humorous inner dialogues while a romantic writer might try to describe things with eloquence and grace. It all depends on your story and how you want to tell it, what type of narration best suits your ideas? A dark and twisted tale might warrant grisly descriptors and manic tension building. You can use any combination of tactics to bring the most out of your story, try to keep your word and tone in sync with the mood and flow of the story.
